Shane McKibben —
Partner, Les Collines Vineyard Manager
I started working in the family vineyards during summer breaks from Washington State University, and I continued on that path after graduating with a degree in advertising. Over the past 20 years, I have supplemented my hands-on vineyard experience by taking classes and seminars at UC Davis and throughout Washington. Much has changed since I planted Whiskey Creek Vineyard in Waitsburg back in 1989. I have learned a lot about growing grapes, and the Walla Walla Valley has become a world renowned wine region. After helping plant Pepper Bridge Vineyard and assisting in the Seven Hills Vineyard expansion project, I worked in irrigation design and sales for three years. We then had an opportunity to buy some property in the foothills of Walla Walla’s Blue Mountains, which we named Les Collines Vineyard and started planting in the spring of 2000. This is one of Amavi’s key estate vineyards and is the source of our prestigious Les Collines Vineyard Syrah.
I am also involved in the composting operation for all three of our estate vineyards. We create compost specially formulated for each vineyard, depending on the soils’ particular needs. This is the starting point for farming sustainably, which is a key part of our winery's mission.
My wife Michelle and I met in Walla Walla and are raising our two children, Shyla – 12, and Patrick – 8. We enjoy the seasons of the Walla Walla valley that give us long hot days and cool nights in the summer and snow in the winter. We have beautiful mountains and rivers nearby for recreation, and the climate and soils are just right for growing great wines.
